Water Tank Insulation

Not all water tanks are created equal.

You might be surprised to know that a great number of industrial water tanks are not manufactured with sever weather specifications. With out modification many of these tankers and mobile liquid tanks would have their load freeze in sever winter conditions like the sometimes -40 that happens in Alberta.

That’s where Insul-Foam Services steps in to insulate these tanks to a level that will keep their contents fluid.

We recently spray foamed a mobile water tank for a local company with our closed cell spray foam application and it’s doing such a great job they have decided to upgrade more.

New Spray Foam From Soprema.

Here we are spraying a new Spray Foam From Sprema

SOPRA-SPF is a two-component polyurethane foam with a closed-cell structure. This superior quality product is designed for interior or exterior insulation applications, whether commercial, industrial, or residential.

It has the new HFO (Hydrofluoroolefin) blowing agent and is Greenguard Gold certified.

It usually takes a bit of time to dial in the temperature and pressure when starting out with a new product. It’s always important to check for proper adhesion and use density tests when spraying foam.

Below is a picture of an adhesion test in progress. The round disc stuck to the foam has been cored around right to the concrete substrate. We then hang a weight off the disc to make sure our adhesion is good.

Managing obstacles while spray foaming.

Here we are spraying foam on an ongoing project in downtown Calgary.

On most construction sites there are more than one trade at a time working in the same space. This is to get the job done in a timely manner and on budget.

Sometimes the job of spray foaming can be complicated by having to maneuver around unfinished wiring and structural incompleteness.

Spray foam can adhere to many substances including metal, concrete, and wood. These surfaces need to be clean and dry or the Spray foam may not attach itself properly.

Insul-Foam Services always takes into consideration environment and working conditions before spaying and makes adjustments for other trades to complete their work so our spray foam is applied correctly and safely.

Spray Foam the Small Spaces

If you are renovating your basement or any space below grade keeping it warm and dry is a priority.

This is an example of a small basement development we recently sprayed in a condo. As it’s between other units, we only had to spray the front and back foundation walls tying into the rim/joist ends for a continuous seal. This space will stay warm and dry for years to come.

Keep Water From Freezing With Spray Foam

No matter what system you use Metric or Imperial, water freezes at 0°.

These water tanks turned out to be an interesting project.

After wrapping them in a 3″ closed cell spray foam, they were then coated again with a white Tank coat, a product made right here in Calgary by Polymer Science Corp.

This process will keep even the most bitter Alberta weather from freezing water in these outdoor water tanks.

Spray Foam Skid Edition

With welding shops getting busier skid production is up. A skid is a heavy metal based platform often used to support machinery and heavy equipment. They typically have no bottom deck and the structure is usually on skis or skids which allows them to be pulled into position through almost any terrain.

Insul-Foam Services spray foamed this with a class 1ASTM-E84 tatted foam used in for most industrial applications.

Spray Foam – Not as Easy as it Looks

When you see do it our self or for that matter even professional reno shows that use spray foam as an insulation, it looks pretty easy. Just spray it on and your good to go.

At Insul-Foam Services we specialize in the the hard spaces that need insulation but also need thinking out of the box to get the job done.

On this job we had a challenge getting the hose supported properly. The job was made easier by a helpful site super and good crane operator as we had to get the hose up to the 7th level, then over to the stairwell and down to the 5th floor to slowly work our way back up. Tough day for all involved!
