Insul Foam Services Spray Foam Insulation

What is spray foam anyway and why is it used?

Spray polyurethane foam, commonly referred to as SPF, is a sprayed  foam insulation that starts as a liquid, goes through specialized equipment, and is then mixed at the end of the spray gun. It is sprayed onto a surface and expands multiple times past its original volume. SPF formulas can be adjusted to have different physical properties depending on the type of application you need it for. For example, the same basic materials can make an insulation foam that is semi-rigid and soft to the touch, and those same materials can also create a high-density roofing foam that is resistant to various weights and water.

Spray foam insulation is used in both residential and commercial applications because of its ability to seal and insulate structures. Common uses for it include home insulation and structure sealing. The properties of spray foam make it a much tighter sealant and insulator than packaged material you might generally apply to your house or commercial structure. The ability to spray it also allows its use on extraordinary shaped structures. Learn more about spray foam applications.

No more condensation and cold transfer issues

As I’ve said before, we do some interesting applications at Insul Foam Services. Here we are in downtown Calgary spray foaming the underside of an exterior parkade where they struggled with condensation and cold transfer for many years in the mechanical room.

This one took a lot of prep and it was tedious to work around all the duct work, electrical etc. but it turned out great. We applied the DTM bonding primer and DC-315 Intumescent coating afterward for a thermal barrier as per code. This will end up being the warmest room in the building now!

Ready to discuss your industrial foam application?

Here’s a recent skid project we completed for one of our industrial customers. The engineers called for the DC-315 Intumescent coating on these ones. We first applied Genyk’s Class 1 B-5019 foam at a 3 inch depth, then primed with the Sherwin Williams DTM bonding primer before spraying on the DC-315. With our highly trained, experienced crew, the job turned out great!

We offer a wide variety of industrial applications as well as other unconventional uses of polyurethane foam from skid packages for the oil industry to underground waterlines, tanks and pipelines.

Unexpected spray foam solutions

Insulfoam Services Spray Foam SolutionsDid you know that spray foam will adhere to almost anything and if you use a waterproof foam? It’s true. There are many uses for spray foam that you may not have considered. For example:

  1. A loose shower head. Just cover the tile around it and spray foam in the loose area and let it harden. Then use an exacto knife to carve off the excess and replace the cover plate.
  2. Older copper pipes that are making noise. Locate the source and fill the space around the pipe with spray foam. You may have to remove a small area of drywall, but the silence will be worth the effort!
  3. Opening(s) where insects are getting into your home? Fill the crack or space with steel wool and fill with spray foam.
  4. Even a great adhesive for those outdoor projects such as sealing your leaking eavestrough or repairing decorative rock.

The Best Time to Insulate

One of the best times to insulate is during a renovation. If you are remodelling or changing any interior wall that is an exterior wall this would be a great time to upgrade your insulation.

If you have existing fiberglass or batten insulation you might be surprised to know that almost 30% of air escapes from it and that number increases if it is improperly installed.

Spray foam does conform to the space in which it is in and can decrease  heating/cooling costs up to 60%.

Other benefits:

  • Can improve air quality and help to reduce allergic reactions to pollen and dust
  • Helps to reduce mold and mold growth
  • Water & flood resistant
  • Does not support or spread flame
  • Provides a greater sound barrier making homes and living spaces quieter
  • Spray foam is not a food source for insects and vermin.

This garage renovation in Banff was the perfect opportunity to replace old fiberglass insulation with spray foam creating a warm mountain morning or winter environment.
